New 49.9 MWe Cogeneration Unit at Gdynia CHP Plant

We have completed the construction of a new installation for PGE Energia Ciepła S.A., Wybrzeże Branch, as part of a consortium led by SBB ENERGY S.A.
The project involved the installation of five gas engines with a total electrical output of 49.9 MWe, operating in a cogeneration system to simultaneously generate electricity and heat, delivering high overall efficiency while significantly reducing environmental impact.
Project Overview:
Client: PGE Energia Ciepła S.A., Wybrzeże Branch
Location: Gdynia CHP Plant, Gdynia, Poland
Electrical output: 49.9 MWe (5 × 9.99 MWe)
Thermal output: 49.3 MWt
Overall system efficiency: above 92%
Electrical efficiency: above 46%
CO₂emissions reduction: 40% compared with coal-based technology
SBB ENERGY S.A. role: Consortium Leader
Consortium partners: ERGOM Sp. z o.o., CELBUD-PRZEMYSŁÓWKA Sp. z o.o.
Project duration: 2 years and 4 months
Contract schedule: completed on time
Scope of Work
We delivered the project on a comprehensive turnkey basis, covering the entire process from engineering and design, through equipment supply and installation, to commissioning and handover for operation.
The scope also included the construction and installation of the associated infrastructure:
- gas engine building,
- gas treatment and conditioning station,
- oil unloading and storage station,
- electrical building,
- heat exchanger station,
- district heating water pumping station,
- fuel supply and heat distribution systems,
- electrical power export system to the 110 kV grid,
- access road infrastructure.
We also secured a long-term service agreement for the installation.

Project Significance
We contributed to the decarbonisation of the Gdynia CHP Plant and the energy transition of the region. The project will enhance the security of heat supply while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 40%.
At the time construction commenced, it was only the second installation in Poland to use gas engines of this scale. We developed the technical solutions from the ground up, and the experience gained during the project is now being applied to subsequent cogeneration projects across Poland.
We would like to thank PGE Energia Ciepła, our consortium partners, and everyone involved in the delivery of the project for their cooperation and trust.
